Speaking at a press briefing and later at the Standing committee meeting on the first day of the Spring Session of NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Tallinn, Dr. Karl A. Lamers reiterated the Assembly’s serious concern regarding recent developments in Ukraine, particularly with regard to the imprisonment of former government officials, and their treatment in prison.

The Assembly maintains an active dialogue and partnership with the Ukrainian Parliament, and  has firmly supported Ukraine’s democratic transformation after the Orange Revolution, the President emphasized.

“We greatly value this relationship, but we are deeply troubled by recent developments. Ukraine has pledged to uphold democratic values and principles as part of its partnership with NATO and its aspirations for European integration. Recent developments in the country call into question Ukraine’s commitment to these values”Lamers stressed. 

“I have on several occasions expressed the Assembly’s serious concern. I have condemned in particular the brutal and unacceptable assault on former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko during her transfer from prison to hospital last month, and urged President Yanukovych to release Ms Tymoshenko without any further delay and to allow her to receive medical treatment abroad”, the NATO PA President said.

Lamers lamented that he had not so far received any reply to his letters to the President of Ukraine, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian parliament), the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the General Prosecutor, conveying his concerns and requesting to visit Ms Tymoshenko. Ms Tymoshenko’s daughter Yevgenia, though unable to attend the Tallinn Session, sent a message to the participants, in which she urged members of the Assembly to increase their pressure on Ukrainian authorities, the President added.

“Let me repeat: we expect from Ukrainian authorities a clear demonstration that they remain committed to respecting the rule of law and fundamental freedoms”,he concluded.
