At its meeting in Budapest on 24 March, the Assembly's Standing Committee elected David Hobbs to succeed the current Secretary General, Simon Lunn, when Mr Lunn's mandate expires on 31 December 2007.

The Assembly's President, José Lello (Portugal) said "The decision to appoint David Hobbs reflects our confidence in the team established by Simon Lunn as well as in the qualities of the next Secretary General."

David Hobbs, 51, a British national, has been Deputy Secretary General since 1997.  Trained initially as a physicist, he obtained a Masters Degree in War Studies and worked in the British civil service, the private sector and as an academic before joining the Assembly in 1983 as Director of the Science and Technology Committee.
