NATO parliamentarians will gather in Rome on 4-5 July for a seminar organised in cooperation with the Italian Parliament on the theme “The Mediterranean at the Crossroads: Challenges, Policy Initiatives and the Limits of Transformation”. Some 70 delegates, including members of parliament from NATO countries and Mediterranean partners, government and international organisations officials, academics and experts from the private sector, will be meeting in the Italian Chamber of Deputies to debate issues such as the Israeli-Palestinian peace process; energy security and interdependence in the Mediterranean; security in the Sahel region; and the “Union for the Mediterranean” project.

Italian Deputy Defence Minister Giuseppe Cossiga will open the seminar on behalf on the Italian government, followed by a keynote address by Ambassador Senén Florensa Palau, Director general of the European Institute of the Mediterranean, Barcelona (IEMed).

Discussions on the Israeli-Palestinian peace process will be stimulated by the interventions of Oded Eran, Director of the Tel Aviv Institute for National Security Studies, and Leila Shahid, General Delegate of Palestine to the EU.

Ambassador Dell L. Dailey, US State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism will address security  threats in the Sahel region and US responses to them.

Gilles Mentré and Lauren Gimenez from the Presidency of the French  Republic will present the “Union for the Mediterranean ” project.

NATO Parliamentarians will also discuss a draft report on Energy Co-operation in the Mediterranean by Turkish member of parliament Vahit Erdem.
