Assembly President John Tanner today said that he was closely following events in Georgia. "Naturally, reports of a military mutiny - perhaps even a planned coup - attempt are a source of grave concern. I am encouraged by recent news that this was an isolated incident that has now been brought to a close. A delegation from the Assembly's Political Committee is currently visiting Georgia and I look forward to hearing assessments of the situation from our own members." |

Regarding the ongoing protests in Tbilisi, Mr Tanner said, "Peaceful protest is a fundamental right, and in any democratic society people must have the freedom to publicly express their opposition to government policies and leadership. However,in the community of democratic nations, the constitution and the ballot box are the only tools for changing democratically elected political leaders." |
