I was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the dreadful tragedy which befell Poland on Saturday in Smolensk. This terrible accident which claimed the lives of President Lech Kaczynski and so many of Poland’s leaders also took that of Jolanta Szymanek-Deresz, a member of the Polish delegation to the Assembly, who was the Vice-Chair of our Science and Technology Committee.

The Polish people have endured dreadful suffering, and it is heart-rending that this appalling event should have happened to those who were due to take part in the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Katyn forest massacre.

The thoughts and prayers of the Assembly’s members will be with our friends and colleagues in the Polish delegation, and we extend our sincere condolences to the families of all the victims.

Jolanta Szymanek-Deresz
