The President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Hon. John Tanner (United States) has hailed the release of Burmese democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi after her lengthy detention.

“As an organization founded on democratic principles, I am sure that I speak for all members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in welcoming the release of Aung San Suu Kyi,” said Congressman John Tanner, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.  “We hope that this is a first step on the path to democracy in Burma and that it is indicative of a trend of greater respect for human rights and freedom of speech in that country.”

Aung San Suu Kyi won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for her work in promoting democracy in Burma, but has been under house arrest by the ruling military junta for 15 of the past 20 years.
