A delegation of key leaders of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, led by Dr Karl A. Lamers (Germany), President of the NATO PA, visited the NATO Communication and Information Systems Services Agency (NCSA) in Mons on 23 February. Meeting with NCSA Director Lieutenant General Kurt Herrmann and officials of NATO’s Information Assurance Technical Centre (NIATC), Dr Lamers stressed the importance of information systems security to the functioning of NATO as an organization, as well as to the welfare of our information-reliant societies.

In this regard, he saluted the emphasis given to cyber-security in NATO’s new Strategic Concept, and the decision by NATO Heads of State and government in Lisbon to enhance the Alliance ’s ability to prevent, detect, defend against and recover from cyber-attacks.

“I was impressed with the remarkable work already carried out by the NCSA and the NIATC to help protect the Alliance ’s networks, including by supporting NATO’s deployed operations”, Dr Lamers said after his visit. “Ensuring secure communications requires the ability to adapt to the growing and constantly evolving threat of cyber-attacks. The decisions taken in Lisbon provide a clear roadmap for enhancing NATO’s cyber-defence capabilities, and turning these decisions into reality is essential. The NATO PA has a role to play in raising awareness of the challenge posed by cyber-attacks. This is why I have made cyber-defence one of the priorities of my presidency. After this visit to NCSA, I intend also to visit the Cooperative Cyber-defence Centre of Excellence in Tallinn in April.”
