On behalf of the members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the Afghan people for the death of former President Burhanuddin Rabbani in today’s attack in Kabul.

President Rabbani played a historic role inAfghanistan’s fight for freedom.  As Chairman of the High Peace Council, he was a major driving force behind current efforts to achieve national reconciliation. These efforts need to continue.Afghanistan’s future lies first and foremost in an Afghan-led political process, and reconciliation efforts are a key element of this.

By agreeing to start the process of transition to Afghan lead responsibility for security, NATO Allies and Afghan authorities have set a clear path ahead forAfghanistan. Our governments have made it clear they are determined to pursue this path hand-in-hand with our Afghan partners, resolutely and undeterred.
