20 October 2011 - NATO PA PRESIDENT PLEDGES CONTINUED SUPPORT TO THE LIBYAN PEOPLE AFTER DEATH OF GADDAFI

When the authoritarian regime in Libya turned against its own people, our governments stood on the side of the Libyan people and on the side of freedom, demonstrating once again that NATO is an Alliance based on values.  Our Assembly likewise backed NATO’s UN-mandated Operation Unified Protector to protect Libyan civilians from harm. 

In that same spirit, the full membership of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly came together less than two weeks ago to collectively express our full support for the Libyan people as they chart a new course for their country.  

In a resolution adopted at our Annual Session in Bucharest[1], we call for the establishment of an inclusive and representative transitional governing structure, for the protection of vulnerable innocents, for justice under the rule of law, and for the respect of Libya's treaty responsibilities.  We also call for the rejection of violent extremism and for the security of Libyan weapons stockpiles.

Members of the Assembly pledge to ensure that the financial resources and expertise necessary for a rapid and successful stabilisation and reconstruction are available to the Libyan people.

We also pledge our support, where requested and appropriate, to the democratic institutions of free Libya as they take these challenging steps forward.  The NATO Parliamentary Assembly will continue to follow developments closely during this historic transition and will stand willing and ready to respond to any such request.”
