Reacting to reports of ill-treatment suffered by Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko during her coerced transfer from prison to hospital as well as to her decision to start a hunger strike, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Dr Karl A. Lamers stated today: “I am shocked by the brutal and degrading treatment of Ms Tymoshenko . There should be no room for such unacceptable acts in Ukraine.” |
|
Lamers also expressed his deep concern at Tymoshenko’s deteriorating health condition. He referred to the findings of independent doctors from Germany, who recently visited the former Prime Minister, and stated that medical treatment of Tymoshenko outside of Ukraine was the most promising approach for Tymoshenko’s recovery. “I urge President Viktor Yanukovych to release Ms Tymoshenko without any further delay and to allow her – as requested by Ms Tymoshenko – to receive the necessary medical treatment abroad.” According to Lamers, members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly greatly value their active co-operation and frank and open dialogue with their colleagues in the Ukrainian Parliament, but they have been troubled by recent developments in the country. “We are looking to Ukrainian authorities for a clear commitment to the democratic values Ukraine has pledged to uphold as part of its partnership with NATO and aspirations for European integration. On the behalf of members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, I strongly urge Ukrainian authorities to hear the concerns expressed by its friends and partners.” Dr Lamers has written to Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Volodymyr Lytvyn, Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Gryshchenko, and General Procurator Viktor Pshonka, conveying these concerns and requesting to visit Ms Tymoshenko. |
