28 July 2004 - PRESS COMMUNIQUE: NATO PARLIAMENTARIANS TO DISCUSS SECURITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES IN THE ARCTIC

Some 40 legislators from the NATO Parliamentary Assembly will hold a seminar from 3-6 August in Spitzbergen, Norway, to discuss security and environmental challenges in the Arctic. The meeting, jointly organised by the NATO PA and the Storting (parliament) of Norway will take place at the Svalbard University Centre in Longyearbyen. Discussions will focus on threats to the fragile arctic environment, including climate change, pollution carried by water and air, and the threat of radiological pollution from nuclear facilities in North-Western Russia. Attention will also be given to various forms of international co-operation in Spitzbergen as well as Norwegian and international scientific research that is being carried out on climate and arctic technology. Leading Norwegian and European speakers will contribute to the seminar: Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan PETERSEN, Executive Director of the European Environment Agency Jacqueline MCGLADE, Head of the Norwegian Polar Institute OLAV ORHEIM, President of the Bellona Foundation FREDERIC HAUGE, and Research Associate at the Centre for Policy Studies in Moscow, DANIIL KOBYAKOV. |
