21 June 2005 - NATO Parliamentarians visit the United Arab Emirates [Press Release]

Parliamentarians from NATO states and countries associated to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 18-20 June on a fact finding mission. The 25 legislators, led by Karl A. Lamers of Germany and by NATO PA President Pierre Lellouche of France held discussions with senior officials of the UAE government, including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Excellency Rashid Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Her Highness Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Economy & Planning. Issues raised included security in the Gulf region, terrorism and WMD proliferation as well as relations between the Alliance and the UAE. |

In his meeting with the delegation, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, announced the UAE's application to participate in the Istanbul Co-operation Initiative (ICI). In the very open, productive and cordial discussions NATO Parliamentarians emphasised the UAE's important role for and contribution to the stability and security of the country and the whole region. Delegates also recognised the UAE's contributions to NATO-led peace building efforts in the Southern Balkans. |
