A delegation of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly is travelling to Afghanistan to observe the elections on Sunday 18 September. Five members of parliament, Mr. Jeppe Kofod from Denmark, Mr. Karel Schwarzenburg from the Czech Republic, Mr. Lucio Malan from Italy, Mrs. Rasa Jukneviciene from Lithuania, and Mr. Kresimir Cosic from Croatia, accompanied by a member of the International Secretariat, Mr. Zachary Selden, Director of the Defence and Security Committee, will be performing their mission under the auspices of the UN's Joint Election Management Body Secretariat (JEMBS). NATO parliamentarians will be observing the elections in Kabul's polling stations according to the needs of the UN's JEMBS.

The goal of the NATO PA mission is to contribute to the international efforts aimed at ensuring that the Sunday elections, which will involve 12 million Afghans in both parliamentary and provincial consultations, will satisfy international democratic standards. Assembly President Pierre Lellouche strongly encouraged the parliamentary observer mission and expressed his hope that the vote will represent for Afghanistan "a fundamental step in its transition to a multi-ethnic, fully representative and democratic government". He also wished to thank ISAF and NATO for the logistic assistance offered to NATO parliamentarians travelling to Kabul.
