The President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, M. Pierre LELLOUCHE (France) accompanied by Vice-Presidents, Pierre Claude Nolin (Canada), Bert KOENDERS (Netherlands), José LELLO (Portugal), Vahit ERDEM (Turkey) and Secretary General, Simon LUNN will visit Georgia from 4 to 7 May 2006.

The main purpose of the visit is to assess Georgia's progress in meeting its aspirations of NATO membership and to see at first hand the problems of the so-called "frozen" conflicts and the latest developments in the Georgia-Russian agreement for the withdrawal of Russian forces from the bases at Batumi and Akhalkalaki.  The visit will also underline the close co-operation which exists between the Assembly and the Georgian parliament.  Georgian parliamentarians participate in a wide range of Assembly activities, providing a parliamentary dimension to Georgia's programme of co-operation with NATO.

The visit is a response to the invitation of Mrs. Nino Burjanadze, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament.

During the visit, the NATO PA President and Bureau members will meet senior figures in both government and parliament, including President Mikhail Saakashvili, Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli, and Mrs. Nino Burjanadze, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament.

Visits are also planned to South Ossetia and Abkhazia with the assistance of the OSCE office in Georgia and the UN Observer Mission in Georgia respectively.
