“I am deeply troubled by developments in Ukraine. Ukraine has been a long-standing partner of NATO, and our Assembly has a well-established and valued relationship with the Ukrainian Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. |

Ukraine has pledged to uphold democratic values and principles but this commitment is called into question by the politically motivated incarceration of former government officials based on flawed trials. Ukraine’s aspirations for European integration cannot be fulfilled until it strengthens the rule of law with a genuinely impartial and independent judicial system in accordance with European standards, and a penal code which distinguishes between criminal and political responsibility. It is high time for Ukraine to end the flawed and shameful incarceration of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and other political actors. The 28 October parliamentary elections will also be an important test for the country, and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly will join the OSCE-led mission in monitoring the conduct of the vote. The people of Ukraine must be able to choose their representatives in a free and fair election. We look forward to seeing concrete signs that Ukraine is taking the steps needed to restore its credibility with its international partners” |
