John Tanner (US) President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, stated today that the revelation of a previously undeclared nuclear facility in Iran, “demonstrates that Iranian statements on the extent of their nuclear activities have been incomplete, and show that the government of Iran has yet to fully understand the depth of international concern about the nature of its nuclear programme. I am sure that my parliamentary colleagues across the Alliance share my concern and determination, and this will be a key point of discussion at our forthcoming Annual Session in Edinburgh.”

Congressman Tanner went on to say that, “This is not an issue of whether or not Iran has a right to develop nuclear power for civilian use. This is about restricting and restraining the proliferation of nuclear weapons that would set off a destabilizing wave across the region.” Congressman Tanner noted that Iran’s actions are likely to backfire and leave that country in a weakened position in future negotiations. “What we have seen today can only isolate Iran further from the rest of the international community,” said Mr. Tanner. “Iran must understand that its actions are counter-productive and may well result in new economic sanctions.”
