Members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly will gather in Brussels on 20-21 February, ahead of President George W Bush Summit with NATO and the EU. Some 115 legislators from all NATO countries will hold meetings with NATO and EU officials to discuss key transatlantic security issues. On Sunday 20 in the morning, parliamentarians will be briefed on the Alliance's current political agenda by Ambassador Günther Altenburg, NATO Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs. They will then discuss NATO's relations with legislators with the help of Jean Fournet, Assistant Secretary General for Public Diplomacy. In the afternoon, members of the NATO PA will debate the Alliance's operational priorities with General Gerhard W. Back, Commander, Joint Forces Command North. On Monday morning, parliamentarians will meet in the European Parliament and be briefed by Gijs de Vries, EU Counter-Terrorism Co-ordinator, on the progress and challenges in transatlantic co-operation in the fight against terrorism. "This meeting is a unique opportunity" declared Pierre Lellouche, President of the NATO PA "to meet NATO officials and hear directly from them about the Alliance's policies and operations. But it is also an opportunity to discuss with our colleagues, including members of the US Congress and the Canadian parliament, our common security concerns." |
