NATO’s most senior civilian representative in Afghanistan, Mr Hikmet Cetin, has called for an increased commitment to the country by alliance member states in order to build on the success of defeating al-Qaeda and Taliban forces based there.

"The Taliban is ousted and Al-Qaeda no longer has a solid base in Afghanistan. The number of terrorist activities has diminished in comparison to previous year… However, fundamentalist circles within and outside Afghanistan continue to encourage discontent and violence," he told a meeting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly's Defence and Security Committee.

The Assembly, which brings together some 300 legislators from North America and Europe, is currently holding its 51st Annual Session in Copenhagen.

Mr Cetin, a former Turkish minister, was one on the key-note speakers to address the committee's session in the Folketing (Danish Parliament) on Saturday.

"NATO should increase its engagement with neighbouring countries its own success and for a stable Afghanistan. Let us remember that… half of the world is connected to Afghanistan," he told the committee.

Mr Cetin said it was essential to keep the political momentum going in Afghanistan or the country could slide back into anarchy.

"Reform is occurring because we, NATO, the nations present here are present in Afghanistan. Progress and reform will continue, if we press forward… it will collapse if we stall, or worse yet, withdraw," he added.
