France’s top anti-terrorist Judge said today (Sunday) that the war in Iraq had had a “very negative” effect on the fight against terror in Europe and directly contributed to a surge in suicide bombings, such as last July’s attack in London. |

"The Iraq war was an event which gave new breath and strength to Islamic terrorism … Iraq is a black hole," Jean-Louis Bruguiere told a meeting of NATO Parliamentarians in Paris. Monsieur Bruguière, Vice-President of the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris, said the war had led directly to the recruitment of new followers and a radicalization of the movement both within Iraq and in Europe. "Iraq certainly had a very negative effect on (the fight against) terrorism, especially on the recruitment of new followers, particularly women. Until then, we had known actors but then the whole landscape changed," he told a meeting of the NATO-Parliamentary Assembly. He said the most notable result had been the radicalization of the concept of the "Martyr", and the increased use of human shields and suicide bombers, often women with no previous connection to Islamic terror movements. "Suicide attacks are almost impossible to protect against … this is an evolution which is very worrying," he told the NATO-PA's Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security. He said the emergence of new radical terrorists in Europe with no criminal past who can move almost at will around the continent was a particular danger.
