Current tensions in the Middle East and their impact on dialogue and cooperation across the Mediterranean will be the main focus of the Mediterranean Dialogue Seminar co-organised by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and the Italian Parliament, to be held in Naples, 2-3 July, and gathering some 45 parliamentarians from NATO countries and partners from the Middle East and North Africa. |

In particular, legislators will debate the increasingly dramatic conflict between Israelis and Palestinians with the help Monica Maggioni, a senior foreign correspondent of RAI, the Italian public TV, and John Ging, Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Gaza. NATO legislators will also discuss untangling the prospects for Iraq with contributions from Ambassador Gian Ludovico De Martino, Head of the Iraq Task Force in the Italian Foreign Ministry, and Gareth Stansfield of the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter. The developments in the NATO Mediterranean Dialogue and the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative will be addressed by Ambassador Maurizio Moreno, Permanent representative of Italy to the North Atlantic Council, while the contribution of the European Union to the security of the Mediterranean region will be presented by Christian Jouret, Head of the Middle East and Mediterranean Unit of the EU Council. |
