NATO Parliamentary Assembly President, Dr Karl A. Lamers (Germany), will travel for an official visit to Ukraine on 3-4 July. He will visit former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on Tuesday 3 July at the hospital where she is being treated in Kharkiv. In Kyiv, on Wednesday 4 July, the President is scheduled to meet Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Lytvyn, as well as Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, and Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Gryschchenko. Dr Lamers will also hold talks with Arseniy Yatsenyuk, leader of the united opposition.

“This is not a routine visit”, President Lamers said ahead of his visit. “I am travelling to Ukraine to convey my concerns, and the concerns of my colleagues in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, to the Ukrainian authorities about the apparent setback in Ukraine’s democratic progress, and in particular about the imprisonment of former government officials.

“This month, we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the NATO-Ukraine Charter. At the heart of NATO’s cooperation with Ukraine lies a commitment to common values, values such as respect for the rule of law, democracy and fundamental freedoms. The NATO Parliamentary Assembly, as the inter-parliamentary assembly bringing together democratically elected representatives of the people from across the Alliance and partner countries, embodies those values, which also form the bedrock of our cooperation with the Ukrainian Parliament.
“During my visit, I will discuss with Ukrainian officials what measures they intend to take to move Ukraine forward on its democratic path, on the path towards EU integration and closer cooperation with NATO. I hope to hear a clear commitment from Ukrainian authorities to the common values at the heart of these partnerships.”

Dr Lamers will be accompanied on this official visit by Assen Agov (Bulgaria), Co-Chairman of the Ukraine-NATO Interparliamentary Council , and NATO PA Secretary General David Hobbs.
