The NATO Parliamentary Assembly, in co-operation with the Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan will be holding its 71st Rose-Roth Seminar in Astana on 26 June in the Independence Palace. This will be the first time that such an event is held in a Central Asian Country and following NATO’s EAPC Security Forum to be held in the same venue on 25 June. |
|
The aim of the seminar is to examine both achievements and remaining challenges in the Central Asian region. Following an opening address by Martha Brill Alcott, Senior Associate, Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., the seminar will focus on three issues: the democratic development of Central Asian countries; the economic challenges of the region; the environmental problems, including water issues, soil degradation, industrial pollution and the legacy of the Soviet WMD complex. Members of parliament from 21 NATO and partner countries as well as delegations from Rose-Roth Seminars normally bring together between 80 and 130 participants, half of whom are members of parliament from NATO and partner countries, and the rest of whom represent governments, the host country, international organisations, universities, NGOs and think tanks. The general objective of these seminars is to nurture an ongoing dialogue on major security matters between NATO Countries' legislators and their counterparts from partner nations. Media interested in covering the event should contact press@nato-pa.int for the Seminar programme and visit NATO’s website at:http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/news_55142.htm?mode=pressrelease for more information on the EAPC Security Forum and accreditation.
