The NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) at a plenary meeting in Ljubljana today joined the chorus of international demands for an international investigation into the violent events in Uzbekistan on 13 May 2005 and urged the Uzbek authorities to assist international officials in carrying it out.

Approx. 300 Parliamentarians, representing over 40 countries who are holding a five day Spring Session in Ljubljana, Slovenia unanimously condemned the "disproportionate use of force" by Uzbek security forces against opposition protesters and civilians in Andijan and other places.

The NATO PA gathering passed a declaration which, also focussing on NATO related issues, recommended that Uzbekistan participation in the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) of NATO and Partnership for Peace (PfP) member States should be reconsidered and that all NATO nations should eventually suspend any support to the Uzbek armed forces.
