With 90 % of the world’s trade using the sea, and increased attention to the dangers posed by terrorism in the post-9/11 world, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s Sub-Committee on Transatlantic Defence and Security Cooperation visited the Alliance’s Joint Force Command in Naples, Italy on May 6 and 7, 2008. The Sub-Committee sought to better understand and evaluate the Alliance’s efforts to deal with the threat of maritime terrorism, as well as the other activities of the Command.

The Delegation, led by Sub-Committee Chairman Sven Mikser from Estonia, was comprised of 13 members and 2 Associate Members of the Sub-Committee, representing 13 different countries.  The group received comprehensive briefings on the three operations run by JFC-Naples (peacekeeping in Kosovo, Operation Active Endeavour in the Mediterranean, and a training mission in Iraq), the Command’s structure and functioning, as well as gaining direct viewpoints from US Navy Admiral Mark Fitzgerald, JFC-N Commander, and subordinate commanders in the field.  In addition, the delegation was provided with an extensive hands-on demonstration of naval activities by NATO’s Standing Maritime Group 2.
