I strongly condemn the ongoing conflict between Russia and Georgia regarding the Ossetian region of Georgia. Whatever the immediate origins of the conflict, the Russian military incursion into Georgia is disproportionate and violates the sovereignty of Georgia. All parties should observe an immediate cease fire, respect international borders, and return to the status quo ante. When that has been accomplished, there must be a return to negotiations, which are the only way to reach a lasting solution to this conflict. |
