"I was pleased to meet with President Saakashvili upon his return today from Poti. As NATO Parliamentary Assembly President, I believe it is important to visit face-to-face with democratically elected leaders.

Georgia has shown it takes democracy seriously and that it is diligently working to meet the requirements of NATO membership.

As I said in a speech at the NATO Summit on April 4 in Strasbourg, 'The Alliance is a community united by its beliefs in democracy, individual freedom, human rights and the rule of law.'  President Saakashvili has told me today Georgia continues to make strides in all these areas.  I was particularly pleased to hear he believes lawful demonstrations are a part of any democracy and that he is committed to protecting individual rights and the rule of law.

I look forward to more conversations with Georgia's leadership and believe they have a bright future ahead."
