8 July 2009 - NATO Parliamentarians Discuss Strategic Concept with NATO Secretary General

Officers of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly met with NATO officials, think tank experts and national military officials to discuss the new NATO Strategic Concept on Tuesday 7 July.

The meeting organised by NATO began with an address by the Secretary General in which he emphasized the need to draft a Strategic Concept that is understandable and persuasive to the general public.   Sven Mikser, NATO PA   Vice President and Special Rapporteur on the Assembly’s contribution the Strategic Concept echoed this theme in his speech to the group, noting that, “parliaments and parliamentarians are an important channel of communication between NATO and the general public.”  The participants in the conference concluded that the Strategic Concept would have to clearly define the extent to which NATO would become involved in issues such as energy security or cyber-security.
