Dr Karl A. Lamers, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly and Member of the Bundestag for the CDU representing the constituency of Heidelberg/Weinheim, has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order for Merits to Lithuania at the Presidential Palace in Vilnius. |

Dalia Grybauskaitė, the President of the Republic of Lithuania, paid tribute during the ceremony to Dr Lamers’ longstanding commitment to Lithuania’s integration into NATO. She also thanked him for his outstanding commitment to strengthening German-Lithuanian relations. “Today, on Statehood Day, we honour prominent Lithuanians and foreign nationals who have made a significant contribution to our country and its international standing,” President Grybauskaitė said in her speech.
“Being presented with this honour was a moving moment for me. Many people will certainly remember the dramatic images from 1991, when the people of Lithuania courageously and bravely fought for freedom and democracy outside the parliament,” said Dr Lamers. “It has always been clear to me that Lithuania is part of our Euro-Atlantic family. And so from the very beginning I have supported Lithuania’s efforts to become a member of the EU and, in particular, NATO.
