Dr Karl A. Lamers, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, issued the following statement today:

“With the effective collapse of the Gaddafi regime, the Libyan people have opened a new chapter in their country’s history. The future is now in their hands. The new authorities in Libya will have the immense task and responsibility of living up to the hopes and expectations they have created among the Libyan people of a new Libya based on respect for the rule of law, democracy, human dignity and fundamental rights and freedoms.

The international community has demonstrated not just with words, but also with deeds, that it stands by the Libyan people in support of these aspirations. It has condemned strongly and repeatedly the unacceptable and unjustifiable violence exerted by the Gaddafi regime. To put an end to this violence and prevent imminent massacres from occurring, NATO was mandated by the United Nations to intervene. For the past five months, from the air and from the sea, Allied forces have carried out their task of protecting civilian populations against attacks with an unwavering commitment and remarkable professionalism. On behalf of the members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, I would like to pay the highest tribute to their dedication, courage and achievements.

Our governments will continue to stand by the Libyan people as they chart a new course for their country. The NATO Parliamentary Assembly will also continue to follow developments closely. I am certain that my colleagues look forward to opportunities for engagement with the new authorities, and will stand willing and ready to respond to any request of assistance.”
