Dr Karl A. Lamers, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly on Monday welcomed the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Leymah Gbowee of Liberia, and Tawakul Karman of Yemen for their work promoting the rights of women.

I would like to warmly welcome the recent decision by the Nobel Committee to honour Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakul Karman for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and women’s rights to full participation in peace building in Africa and the Arab world,’’ he said in his speech to the Plenary sitting of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly held in Bucharest.

"I fully agree with the Committee that we cannot achieve lasting peace and sustainable security in the world unless women obtain the same opportunities as men to influence developments at all levels of society," he added.
