Dr Karl A. Lamers, President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, issued the following statement today: “I congratulate the millions of Tunisians who voted on Sunday in a peaceful and orderly manner in the first democratic election held in the country. The Tunisian people’s courageous struggle for democracy, freedom and dignity during the Jasmine Revolution was a source of inspiration for the region and for the world. Sunday’s election marks a further historic milestone on the path towards democratic transition. |

In the coming weeks and months, the newly elected Constituent Assembly will face the difficult tasks of forming an interim government, drafting a new constitution and charting the next steps for the country’s transformation into a parliamentary democracy, while continuing to address the aspirations of all Tunisians in an inclusive and transparent manner. When I visited Tunisiashortly before the election[1], I was highly impressed by the determination of my interlocutors to demonstrate to the world that the Jasmine Revolution succeeded, and that democracy can be built on the ruins of decades of dictatorship and corruption. Tunisians have a clear sense of the example they are setting for others. Their success will encourage all those seeking to follow a similar path. As I have told my interlocutors in Tunisiaand as our entire Assembly has recently reaffirmed[2], the NATO Parliamentary Assembly stands willing and ready to assist, if requested, with the country’s transition to democracy. I am convinced we can make an important contribution based on our shared values, and the experience of those of our members from Central andEastern Europe which have themselves undergone democratic transition.” [2] See RESOLUTION 390 on THE POLITICAL TRANSFORMATION IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA, adopted by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly at its Annual Session in Bucharest, Romania, on 10 October 2011 |
