NEW CHALLENGES FOR NATO SET TO DOMINATE LEGISLATORS MEETING IN ISTANBUL

Brussels - 5 November 2002. NATO’s adaptation to meet the new challenges posed by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), terrorist threats to its members and the forthcoming enlargement of NATO are set to dominate the 48th Annual Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) which will take place in Istanbul from November 15 to 19, 2002. |

The Session, to be held at the Lufti Kirdar Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre (ICEC), will bring together about 300 legislators from over 40 countries including the 19 NATO member countries, 17 NATO PA associate members and up to 11 parliamentary observer states. Press Briefing Mr. Rafael Estrella, President of the NATO PA Mr. Tahir Kose, Head of the NATO PA Turkish Delegation and Mr. Simon Lunn, Secretary General of the NATO PA Thursday November 14 at 16.00 in the Haliç Room on the Lower Level of the Lufti Kirdar Convention Centre. A major highlight will be the Assembly’s debate at the Plenary Sitting on Tuesday November 19 on a Draft Declaration on NATO Transformation (see website http//www.nato-pa.int for full text) which was adopted by the Assembly’s Standing Committee in Brussels on October 6 2002. The six-page Draft Declaration will represents the Assembly’s collective view of the full range of issues expected to feature at the Prague Summit Meeting of NATO Heads of State and Government on November 21 and 22. As well as calling upon NATO’s leaders to invite Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to join NATO, the Declaration makes recommendations on the revision of NATO’s roles, missions, and structures to deal with 21st century threats to international security, peacekeeping operations in the Balkans, and NATO’s relations with the European Union, Russia, Ukraine, and other non-member countries. The final version approved by the Assembly will be presented to NATO leaders at the Prague Summit by the new President of the Assembly who will be elected at the Plenary Sitting. The 5 day NATO PA Annual Session also includes meetings of its 5 committees (Political; Defence and Security; Economics and Security; Science and Technology; and the Civil Dimension of Security) on Saturday and Sunday November 16 and 17 to receive briefings from a series of international experts, and debate reports on topical issues. The Opening Ceremony of the Session on Friday, November 15 at 14.30 will feature keynote addresses by the President of Turkey, Mr. Ahmet Necdet Sezer, the Secretary General of NATO, Lord George Robertson and the President of the NATO PA, Mr. Rafael Estrella.
