Heads of delegations and leaders of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA) met with NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, and Permanent Representatives to the North Atlantic Council, in a joint session on Monday 13 February 2012. Dr Karl A Lamers, President of the NATO PA, also held a separate meeting with the NATO Secretary General.

As NATO Heads of State and Government prepare to meet at a Summit in Chicago in May 2012, parliamentarians and Permanent Representatives reviewed some of the key priorities and challenges facing the Alliance. Discussions focused on possible ways to mitigate the impact of the global economic and financial crisis on defence budgets and capabilities, notably the NATO Secretary General's smart defence initiative. Participants also reviewed the progress of transition in Afghanistan, and the Alliance's post-2014 commitment; the development of NATO's Missile Defence system; and the evolution of NATO's partnerships.

These meetings are part of regular consultations between the two organizations.
