The NATO Parliamentary Assembly paid an emotional tribute Monday to its former President and longest serving member LoÏc Bouvard.

The forum in Tallinn was the last Assembly Session for Bouvard, a member of the NATO PA since 1978, who has decided not to run for re-election to the French Parliament.

“He is not only the longest serving member of this organisation, but, more importantly, he has been a driving force behind many of the Assembly’s policies and initiatives,” said the Assembly’s current President Dr. Karl A. Lamers, in his tribute at the Spring Session’s final plenary sitting.

Speaking of Bouvard’s “exceptional contribution and outstanding achievements,” Dr Lamers called him “a role model” for other members of the Assembly which is made up of lawmakers from the 28 NATO nations.    

In his final address, Bouvard urged the Assembly to keep and reinforce the transatlantic link and stressed the importance of building strong ties between NATO and Russia.

At the age of 15, Bouvard became the youngest recipient of France’s Croix de Guerre medal for his role in the French Resistance in the Second World War. He was elected to the French National Assembly in 1973 and served his Brittany constituency for 39 years, winning nine elections.
