More than twenty members and associate members of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly are taking part in the International Election Observer Mission (IEOM) in Ukraine on 26 December. Assembly President Pierre Lellouche and Senator Lucio Malan, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on the Civil Dimension of Security, will lead the delegation.

The Assembly’s Standing Committee decided in May that Assembly members should participate in the international monitoring of the Ukrainian Presidential election in order to demonstrate the Assembly’s commitment to Ukraine, and its concern that the election met with international standards.

Subsequently, the speaker of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, Mr Volodymyr Lytvyn invited the Assembly to participate in the international monitoring of the election.

As with the previous rounds of the Ukrainian Presidential Election - on 1 November and 21 November – the IEOM consists of delegations from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and the European Parliament.

On Saturday 25 December, ODIHR experts and long-term election observers will brief the participants. Of key interest will be the extent to which Ukraine has corrected the electoral shortcomings identified by the IOEM during the two previous rounds.

On Sunday 26 December, the observers will form two-person teams which will visit as many polling stations as possible. Teams usually begin their first visit at about 07:30 to monitor a polling station as it prepares to open at 08:00, and the day concludes by witnessing the count in a polling station following its closure at 20:00.

The IEOM’s preliminary report will be published early in the afternoon of Monday 27 December.
