The Mediterranean Special Group of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly visited Jordan on 3 and 4 May. A delegation of 20 members of parliament, representing 11 NATO countries held meetings in Amman with government officials, including Prime Minister Adnan Badran and Foreign Minister Farouq Alqasrawi, and members of parliament, including the President of the Senate Mr Ziad Al Rifai and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abdulhadi Al Majali.

Most Jordanian politicians stressed the unique situation of their country, at the centre of a troubled region and suffering serious consequences from the conflicts in Iraq and between Israeli and Palestinians. Nonetheless, the relative stability of the kingdom was also highlighted, as well as its advanced process of democratic reform.

Following the visit, on 5-7 May, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, the NATO Public Diplomacy Division and the Jordanian parliament co-sponsored an international seminar on "Recent Developments and New Political Perspectives in the Broader Middle East Region".

This international seminar brought together members of parliament from NATO and Mediterranean Dialogue countries, with opinion leaders from the region and officials from NATO, the United Nations, and the European Union. Different aspects of security in the Mediterranean and in the Middle East region were analysed during the seminar's discussions.
