11 JULY 2005 - STATEMENT BY PIERRE LELLOUCHE, PRESIDENT OF THE NATO PARLIAMENTARY ASSEMBLY, ON THE TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MASSACRE AT SREBRENICA

July 2005 marks the tenth anniversary of the massacre at Srebrenica where 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered by Bosnian Serb forces. It represents the darkest chapter in European history since World War II. As we commemorate this horrific event, now recognized by all sides as genocide, we should remember that we failed to act in time to prevent this from happening. The impact of this barbaric act still resonates today across the region and should haunt the conscience of its perpetrators. At the same time, we should also remember that much has changed since then. |

Many of those responsible for the massacre are being called to account before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), and it is high time for those who are still at large to be arrested. NATO and the EU continue to play a critical role in stabilizing the Balkan region. Most of all, however, we should remember those innocent victims that lost their lives at Srebrenica and remember that the peace and stability we currently enjoy cannot be taken for granted. |
