Major General Vladimer Chachibaia has been appointed as Chief of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces since December 2016. During his military career Major General Chachibaia has served in command and leadership positions in the 25th Infantry Brigade, Reconnaissance Battalion, Special Forces Brigade, 1st Infantry Brigade and Land Forces. Previously, General Chachibaia commanded the Georgian Military Contingent in Iraq (2004) and the 3rd Infantry Brigade (2005). He worked in a number of different positions, including Head of J-3 Department of the General Staff, Chief of the Joint Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces, First Deputy Minister of Defence and Rector of LEPL Davit Aghmashenebeli National Defence Academy. General Chachibaia also served abroad as Senior Counselor at the Embassy of Georgia to USA, Canada and Mexico and Senior Military Advisor at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). During his career Major General received the following medals and decorations: Medal for Combat Achievement; Medal “General Mazniashvili”, Medal for Meritorious Service at the Ministry of Defence of Georgia, II rank; Medal for Meritorious Service at the Ministry of Defence of Georgia, I rank, and Commemorative Medal for International Military Cooperation awarded by Ministry of Defence of Mongolia. He was awarded with a Letter of Appreciation by a Special Representative of Secretary General for Afghanistan and the UN Special Service Medal by the UN Secretary General. Major General Chachibaia is a graduate of the Georgian United Military Academy (1993-1994) and the U.S. Army War College (2007-2008). He also studied at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (2002-2003). General Chachibaia is married and has three children.
