“After Salisbury 2018, a Novichok military-grade nerve agent has, once again, been used to poison a Russian citizen. I sharply condemn the attack on Alexei Navalny and urge the Russian government to fully explain how a chemical weapon it developed could have been used on an opposition politician. Those responsible must be held accountable for this heinous attack with a weapon prohibited under international law.
I welcome the German government’s commitment to inform its Allies and partners in NATO and the EU about the results of its investigation into the matter and to work together on a common approach to this atrocious act.
I am also looking forward to further information from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), which the German government will contact on this grave matter.
My thoughts are with Mr Navalny and his family and wish him a speedy recovery.”
