The NATO Parliamentary Assembly concluded its Annual Session held in Madrid from 18 to 21 November 2022, gathering almost 300 lawmakers from the 30-nation NATO Alliance and partner countries and parliamentary bodies.
The Session demonstrated the Assembly’s resolute stance on Russia’s unprovoked, unjustified and brutal war against Ukraine and unwavering support for Ukraine, its democracy, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Session also proved the resolve to deter against any threat to NATO members and to defend every inch of NATO territory.
Over the course of the Annual Session, the Assembly’s five Committees debated and adopted 16 draft reports.
During Monday’s plenary sitting the Assembly adopted six resolutions distilling key policy recommendations, aimed at keeping the Alliance fit for purpose, implementing defence commitments made at the June 2022 NATO Summit, responding to the economic consequences of Russia´s war, cyber-security, the impact of climate change and fighting corruption.
The plenary sitting was addressed by President of Ukraine Zelenskyy, NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg, President of the Spanish Government Sánchez, President of the Congress of Deputies Batet and President of the Senate Gil.
French Senator Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam was elected President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly for a one-year renewable term. She succeeds outgoing President, US Congressman Gerald E. Connolly. Watch her address:
In his address, Congressman Connolly stressed that Russia’s war on Ukraine has given added urgency to the Assembly’s call for NATO to establish a Centre for Democratic Resilience at Alliance’s headquarters.
The NATO PA also honoured Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration of Ukraine, with the second annual “Women for Peace and Security” Award.
