Brynja joined the Assembly in August 2024 as the Director for the Science and Technology Committee (STC) and the Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group (GSM). Prior to joining the Assembly, Brynja worked for the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs focusing on hybrid and emerging threats. In 2018 and 2019 she was seconded as a Strategic Communications Officer to NATO in Afghanistan. Between 2012 and 2014 Brynja worked as a broadcast journalist for the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service (RÚV). Between 2016 and 2017, she served as an analyst at Janes Defence Intelligence in London, specializing in global terrorism. She has lectured on terrorism at the University of Iceland and held campaign and communications roles for UN Women and Council of Europe.
Brynja is the founder of WIIS (Women in International Security) Iceland and mentors with the Brussels WIIS affiliate. She is a member of the UNIDIR Expert Network on the Governance of Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain and a fellow in the Arms Control Negotiation Academy at Harvard University's Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies (2020-2021 cohort).
Brynja completed a bachelor degree in philosophy from the University of Iceland in 2014, and spent one year on exchange at the Sorbonne, Paris IV. She holds a MSc in Security Studies from University College London.
Brynja’s mother tongue is Icelandic, she is fluent in English and French, with a working knowledge of the Scandinavian languages.
