The Portuguese Parliament and the Portuguese Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly are very honoured to host the 67th Annual Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Portugal and to welcome you in Lisbon, at our first in-person Session after two years.
Although unfortunately we cannot have a regular format session as in previous years, due to COVID related measures to ensure a safe environment for all participants, being face-to-face again brings us a sense of entering the path of a steady recovery post-pandemic.
The Session takes place at a key moment for our Alliance. It will allow us the opportunity to discuss the implementation of the NATO 2030 agenda, an ambitious agenda for the future of NATO, and the constantly evolving challenges that are central to our interests, as well as to provide input to the forthcoming revision of NATO’s Strategic Concept.
The international environment has evolved significantly in the past years and the security threats and challenges to the Euro-Atlantic Security highlight the importance of strengthening the transatlantic link and promoting the Alliance’s shared values and parliamentary diplomacy. In this context, NATO Parliamentary Assembly has an essential role to play, as a privileged forum for political dialogue and for discussing the Alliance’s security and defense matters, as parliamentarians are key in establishing a bridge between the citizens we represent and the Alliance.
Our gathering in Portugal will thus offer us a timely opportunity to reflect and debate on the main challenges to the Euro-Atlantic area. I look forward to welcoming you and wish you a truly productive and successful Session.
