Portuguese Army Lieutenant-General Marco Serronha assumed duties as Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Joint Command for Military Operations, in late 2019.
LTGeneral M. Serronha was previously assigned as the MINUSCA Deputy Force Commander.
He graduated from the Military Academy in 1983, and commissioned as a career Infantry Officer. His military education includes the Infantry Basic and Advanced
Courses, Army Staff Course, Command and General Staff College and course for promotion to General Officer (war college). He holds the Senior Course of the NATO Defence College, the International Military Course in the Law of Armed Conflicts and a Master’s Degree in Strategy.
LTGeneral Serronha has served in key leadership positions at the tactical, operational and strategic level of the Portuguese Armed Forces to include Mech Bde G3, Mech Inf BattalionCmdr, Commandos’ Battalion and Regiment Cmdr, and Operational Commander of Madeira islands, double-headed as Commander of the Military Zone of the whole archipelago.
His field experience includes deployments abroad to serve as the Kosovo Force (KFOR) Deputy Commander and before that as a Battalion Cmdr in Bosnia-Herzegovina (SFOR). In between tours, LTGen Serronha served as Military Assistant to the Portuguese Military Representative at the NATO HQ in Brussels. Due to his qualifications in Commando and Special Operations, he performed as Chief of the Advisory Board of the Commandos’ Project in Angola.
His awards and decorations include the medal of “Ordem Militar de Avis Grande Oficial”, 6 Distinguished Service medals, 1st and 3rd classes military merit medals, medal 1st class “Cruzde São Jorge”, 1st Class medal “D. Afonso Henriques” and Gold and Silver medals of Exemplary Behaviour. He also possesses several commendations from friendly and allied countries.
