NATO PA Standing Committee set to meet in Tallinn to discuss Alliance transformation, Ukraine support & NATO’s 75th anniversary

The annual spring meeting of the Assembly’s governing body will take place on 23 and 24 March in the Estonian parliament, the Riigikogu, chaired by NATO PA President Michal Szczerba (Poland). Hosted by Raimond Kaljulaid and the parliamentary delegation of Estonia, the meeting will bring together over 40 lawmakers from the 32-nation Alliance. 

The Standing Committee will prepare their initial recommendations on how Allied Heads of State and Government should strengthen collective defence and deterrence, transform NATO and maintain full support for Ukraine’s victory when they meet for their 2024 Summit in Washington, D.C. on 9-11 July.

The Assembly’s final recommendations for the Washington NATO Summit will be agreed during its Spring Session in Sofia, Bulgaria at the end of May.

Just days away from NATO’s 75th anniversary, members will also adopt a statement on the occasion. 

Estonia will celebrate 20 years in NATO next week. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and Riigikogu President Lauri Hussar will engage with the Standing Committee.

Prime Minister Kalla’s address and question time will be public and streamed online in English. The video recording will be available to watch later on the Riigikogu YouTube channel.

Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk and Head of the Ukrainian NATO PA delegation Yehor Cherniev will also address the meeting.

At the meeting, delegates will welcome Sweden as the newest addition to NATO and to the Assembly for this first meeting which Swedish parliamentarians will attend as full members.

During their one-day meeting, the Assembly’s leaders will furthermore:

-    consider the Review of the Assembly’s Consideration of Gender in 2023,
-    review NATO PA partnerships; and 
-    discuss other statutory matters. 

The NATO PA serves as the consultative interparliamentary organisation for the North Atlantic Alliance. It is institutionally separate and independent from NATO. 

The Standing Committee is the Assembly’s governing body, composed of the Head of each member delegation, the President, the Vice-Presidents, the Treasurer and the Chairpersons of the Assembly's Committees and of the Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group
