Biographie

Major General (OF7) José L. Murga was nominated Deputy Director for Planning, R&T, on July 2018.

After finishing his education at the Military Academy, Jose L. MURGA was commissioned as Infantry Lieutenant in July 1985.

At tactical level, he has been posted in several Units as Commanding Officer ; Platoon leader, Company commander, then after he was Light Infantry Battalion Commander in the Infantry Brigade “Galicia VII” (2006-2009) and Light Infantry Regiment Commander in the Infantry Brigade “Canarias XVI” (2013-2014).

At operational and military strategic level, his key leadership staff assignments include; Army Logistics Command, NATO Joint Command Southwest, the Quick Reaction Force HQ and the Army Chief of Staff Cabinet. In January 2015, he took over as NATO Branch Chief in the Defence Policy Directorate at the Ministry of Defence.

Once he was promoted to Brigadier General assumed the Army General Staff Logistics Division in February 2016.

Referring to commitments abroad, he has commanded extensively on overseas operations serving seven times in different international operations: Angola as UN Observer, two deployments in Bosnia-Herzegovina, FYROM and three times in Afghanistan.  He commanded a Multinational Battalion in Herat and with the rank of Colonel was designated as Provincial Reconstruction Team Commander in Qala-i-Naw city. In this position in 2013, he was responsible to execute the redeployment of all Spanish forces from Qala-i-Naw to Herat.

From November 2018 till September 2021, he was the Spanish representative in the Steering Committee of the FCAS/NGWS programme. He is also the Spanish Principal Member in the NATO Science and Technology Organisation Board.  

Among others, he has attended the National Staff College Course in Spain, and the 118th Senior Course in NATO Defence College in Rome.
