Brussels/London, 6 February 2019 - The President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA), Madeleine Moon (United Kingdom), welcomed the signing today by NATO Allies of the accession protocol with Skopje.
“This is a historic day for our friends and partners from Skopje as well as for NATO itself, I want to congratulate all those in both Skopje and Athens who have made this incredible breakthrough possible. They have proved to the entire world that even the most entrenched disputes can be resolved through determination and political courage.
The NATO PA looks forward to welcoming its 30th member very soon. As we have done in the past, we will play our full part in ensuring smooth ratification by our national parliaments of the accession protocol signed today.”
Earlier this week, the NATO PA in cooperation with NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division hosted a working visit of a delegation of members of parliament from Skopje focused on their country’s upcoming accession.
Once signed, the accession protocol must be ratified by the parliaments of the 29 current members of NATO as well as by the acceding country. For all past NATO enlargements, the NATO PA has played a leading role in monitoring the ratification process and encouraging its prompt completion. Ratification of the accession protocol signed today by the 29 Ambassadors representing NATO Allies and Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov is expected to take around a year.
