NATO PA President on Russia’s Suspension of New START

22 February 2023

The President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA), Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam (France), issued the following statement on Russia’s Suspension of New START.

“President Putin’s suspension of Russia’s participation in the New START Treaty is deeply disappointing and reckless.

For months, Russia has failed to comply with legally-binding obligations under the Treaty, as Allies noted with concern in a statement of the North Atlantic Council on 3 February 2023.

President Putin must reverse course. Unconstrained nuclear competition is in the interest of no one.
Days away from the tragic one-year anniversary of Russia’s renewed unprovoked, unjustified and brutal war of aggression against Ukraine, President Putin, once again, violates a commitment freely entered by Russia, further destabilising global peace and security and threatening the international rules-based order.

This action underscores why Russia remains the most significant and direct threat to the security of NATO Allies.”
