The President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA), Joëlle Garriaud-Maylam (France), issued the following statement on the so-called ‘elections’ organised by Russia in temporarily occupied regions of Ukraine.
“These so-called ‘local elections’ represent a cynical attempt by Russia to support its illegal claims over occupied Ukrainian regions amidst its ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine.
The international community must emphatically reject this charade, which is yet another demonstration of the Kremlin’s utter disregard for the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, the basic tenets of international law and order.
These regions are Ukraine, and the NATO PA will never recognise any of Russia’s illegal and forcible annexations of Ukrainian territory.
We stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine’s democracy, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, self-defence and self-determination - for as long it takes for Ukraine to prevail.”
